Tutoring, helping with a job search and resume writing, volunteering at an event, educational internships and faith-based activities are just some of the opportunities we have for you to help your homeless neighbors.

VOLUNTEER TO SERVE A MEAL

Whether you are an individual or part of a group, preparing and serving a meal for your homeless and hungry neighbors is a rewarding way to give back to your community.  Sulzbacher serves over 1,500 meals a day and at lunch and dinner we don’t just feed the people who live with us, we welcome anyone in the community who is hungry. To keep our kitchen sustainable and accommodate the need, we ask groups for a financial sponsorship at the lunch and dinner meals. We work hard to keep costs down and are able to serve meals for about 50₵ each. (Student and military groups are exempt from financial sponsorship.)

LET’S GET STARTED

Please follow the steps below to begin the volunteer application process for individuals and groups.

Let's Get Started

STEP ONE

Visit www.sterlingvolunteers.com and create an account in the volunteer portal. Select “Order Your Background Check” or “Good Deed” and enter the code ypcc94o when prompted. Fill out the required forms, enter your payment information, and submit. Background checks typically take 5–15 business days to process. Once completed, email Frances Stephens at fstephens@sulzbacherjax.com to confirm.

STEP TWO

After your background check is approved, you’ll be scheduled for an orientation session. During orientation, you’ll learn about Sulzbacher’s mission, safety protocols, and your role as a volunteer.

STEP THREE

Following orientation, you’ll be introduced to your department supervisor or point of contact based on your volunteer area. They will guide you through any additional training and help you get started—whether you’re serving meals, assisting with childcare, or supporting administrative work.

STEP FOUR

After your orientation, you will be ready to begin volunteering!

  • It can take up to 2 weeks to complete the entire process, but this is necessary to keep our residents safe
  • We are unable to work with court-mandated volunteers
  • Kids 13 to 17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all times

Thank you for taking the first step to becoming an official Sulzbacher volunteer!

We’re truly grateful for your time, heart, and commitment to serving our neighbors in need. Together, we’re making a real difference—one person at a time.
